Venue of iWOAR 2025
Welcome to Enschede

»Enschede is a vibrant city in the eastern Netherlands, located in the province of Overijssel. It lies near the German border and forms part of the Twente region, renowned for its lush landscapes and innovative spirit. The city is embedded in a picturesque environment of rolling countryside, parks, and woodlands, making it a unique blend of urban life and natural beauty. The history of Enschede dates back to the Middle Ages, and its name is thought to originate from a Saxon term meaning "near the border." Once a center of textile manufacturing, Enschede has transformed into a hub of technology, education, and culture, driven by institutions like the University of Twente. Read more about Enschede: «

Public Transportation From Enschede Central Station to the Venue (DesignLab)
  • Bus Line 1: Take bus line 1 in the direction of "Universiteit." This bus goes directly onto the campus, with several stops available. You can get off at UT/Hallenweg stop and walk to the DesignLab.
  • Bus Line 9 (faster): Alternatively, you can take bus line 9 toward Hengelo. Get off at the "Westerbegraafplaats/UT" stop, which is located near the entrance of the university and within walking distance of the DesignLab.
To plan your trip, we recommend using the website or app of 9292.nl, which provides real-time travel advice for all public transport in the Netherlands.

How to Pay for Your Transport Ticket
  • OV-chipkaart: This is the standard public transport card for the Netherlands. You can purchase an anonymous OV-chipkaart at a ticket office or a machine at Enschede Central Station. You then need to load a balance onto the card. The card costs a few euros and the balance can be topped up as needed. You must check in when you board the bus and check out when you get off by holding the card to the card reader.
  • Contactless Payment (Debit/Credit Card): This is the newest and often easiest method for visitors. You can check in and out using your contactless debit card, credit card, or a payment-enabled smartphone. Simply hold your card or phone to the card reader when you board and when you exit. The fare will be automatically deducted from your account. Note that for international cards, credit cards are generally more reliable than debit cards.

Real Dutch Experience: Taking a Bike

If you are looking for the real Dutch experience, you can rent a bike on visit-enschede.com/bike-rental. For a Dutch it takes less than 10 minutes to bike from the city centre to the DesignLab - you might calculate with up to 15 minutes. ;-)
